The Power of the Pick a Number Activity

As an educator, I am always on the lookout for creative and engaging ways to make learning fun and interactive for my students. This endeavor stemmed not only from a mere desire to generate and publish blog contents since I have been utilizing interactive activities in my teaching instruction long before I decided to include this in my blog. I would say, rather this stemmed from my daily interaction with a diverse array of learners who, more often than not, challenge and encourage me to step up efforts when it comes to teaching and making learning more enjoyable for my learners.

One activity that has been a hit in my classroom is the “Pick a Number” activity which I started incorporating into my discussion since last year. This activity involves students selecting a number card and then answering a question or prompt that is written or pasted on the back of each card. Not only does this activity add an element of excitement and surprise to our discussions, but it also encourages active participation and critical thinking among learners.

During the “Pick a Number” activity, students are given the opportunity to select a number card randomly. Each number card is associated with a specific question or prompt related to the content being discussed. Once a student picks a number, they must answer the question or respond to the prompt written on the back of the card. This not only keeps the discussion varied and engaging but also ensures that students are actively participating and thinking critically about the material.

 

Instructions and Mechanics

1. The teacher prepares a cutout of numbers and paste each one of them on the number cards. You can use used folders or any cardboard readily available within your place.
2. The teacher prepares a set of questions or challenges written on strips of paper and attaches them at the back of each number card. The questions and challenges should revolve around the lesson or topic you have for that day.
3. During discussion, the teacher posts these cutouts on the board in such a manner that it looks like a Tic-Tac-Toe tiles and tells the students that they need to accomplish this Pick A Number activity.
4. The teacher may randomly call or choose some learners who will come forward and pick a number.
5. The activity continues when the first learner answers the questions. The same process applies to the succeeding learners who will pick a scoop and answer the question written on it.
